Highway 26 Apple Sign
Highway 26 Apple Sign
Jennifer Kernaghan

Description for Heritage Category: Southern Georgian Bay is the perfect place to grow apples! The valley on either side of the Beaver River protects the area from the most severe weather and the proximity of Georgian Bay moderates the coldest winter weather. Early farmers recognized this potential well over a century ago and so many farms grew up in areas around Meaford, Thornbury and Clarksburg. Almost every farm at the time had a small orchard where farmers grew apples for their families, but for some apple-growing became a business. This distinctive sign near Meaford is a reminder of the hundreds of farmers and workers who grew a variety of apples here for our pleasure – including the McIntosh, discovered on a farm in eastern Ontario. Some of those farms are still growing apples!

Elmvale Drive-in
Elmvale Drive-in
Gordon Llewellyn

Description for Heritage Category: The Elmvale Drive-in now lies abandoned in Springwater township. Family run, in its heyday in the 1970's, the 500- car lot was filled to capacity with avid movie goers! Unfortunately, it could not keep pace with costs of new technology. It closed in the early 2000's.
